A Look Back: History of the Market

The Stuttgart Christmas Market has a long history. City records first mentioned it in 1692. Back then, it was already called a "traditional Stuttgart event."

Today, the market is much bigger. It has about 200 stands. Around 3.6 million people visit it every year. This makes it one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany. Organizers say it is the most traditional Christmas market in Europe, based on its size.

Where to Find the Market

The Stuttgart Christmas Market spreads across several areas in the city center.

Main Market Areas

The market starts at Schlossplatz, which is Stuttgart's main square. Here, you can find a special "fairytale land" for children. There's also a miniature railway and an ice rink.

From Schlossplatz, the market stretches into old squares and alleyways. These include:

  • Schillerplatz
  • Karlsplatz (This area often has a special Finnish Christmas Market and a fair for Christmas collectors.)
  • Marktplatz

Opening Times and Dates

The Christmas market opens every year on the last Thursday in November. The opening ceremony takes place in the old Renaissance courtyard of Stuttgart Old Castle.

The market is open:

  • Monday to Saturday: 10 AM to 9 PM
  • Sundays: 11 AM to 9 PM

The market finishes on Christmas Eve.
