Christoph Westerthaler (born January 11, 1965 – died July 20, 2018) was a talented Austrian football player and coach. He was known for his skills as a striker, scoring many goals during his career. People sometimes called him Gischi.
Christoph's Club Journey
Christoph Westerthaler started his professional football journey at FC Wacker Innsbruck. He played there for a long time, about nine years in total. During this time, he also spent two seasons playing for LASK Linz.
While playing for the team from Tyrol (the region where Innsbruck is), he helped them win some big titles. They won the league championship twice and also won the national cup twice.
In 1994, he moved to SK Vorwärts Steyr. After two years there, he returned to LASK Linz. Later, in 1997, Christoph went to play football in Germany. He played for two major teams in Frankfurt and also for VfL Osnabrück.
Sadly, Christoph had to stop playing football in the summer of 2001. This was because of an injury to his knee.
Playing for Austria
Christoph also had the chance to play for his country, the Austrian national team. His first game for Austria was in October 1989 against Malta.
Even though he played well for his clubs, he wasn't chosen for the big 1990 FIFA World Cup tournament. He played a total of 6 games for Austria, but he didn't score any goals in those matches. His last game for the national team was in November 1993 against Sweden.
