Chucuito is a small town located in the Puno Province of Peru. It is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) away from the city of Puno. Chucuito sits very high up, at 3,875 meters (12,713 feet) above sea level. Around 7,913 people live in this historic town.
Chucuito's History
Chucuito was a very important place even before the powerful Inca Empire existed. A Spanish historian named Pedro Cieza de León wrote about it. He learned from the local people that Chucuito was the oldest settlement in that area.
The Inca people also considered Chucuito a special and sacred place. In the past, the town had many large buildings and was a major center of power and influence in the region.
