Exploring Church Hill Farm

Church Hill Farm is a historic property located in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. It includes a main house and several other important farm buildings. The farm covers about 5 acres of land. It was officially recognized as a historic place in 1980.

The Main Farmhouse

The main house at Church Hill Farm is quite interesting. It was built in different stages over many years. The oldest parts of the house are made of stone. These sections were built around the 1820s or 1830s. They each have three window sections.

Later, between 1840 and 1900, a two-story addition was built. This newer part of the house is made of wood. So, the house is a mix of stone and wood, showing how it grew over time.

Other Farm Buildings

Besides the main house, Church Hill Farm has several other buildings that are also considered historic. These buildings helped the farm operate many years ago.

  • The Barn: A barn is a large building used for storing hay and housing farm animals.
  • The Out Kitchen: This was a separate kitchen building. People often had kitchens outside the main house to reduce fire risk and keep cooking heat away from the living areas.
  • The Corn Crib: A corn crib is a special type of building. It is designed to store corn on the cob. Its slatted sides allow air to circulate, which helps dry the corn and prevent mold.
  • The Wagon Shed: This building was used to store wagons and other farm equipment. It protected them from the weather.

Why is it Historic?

Church Hill Farm is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list kept by the United States government. When a place is on this list, it means it's important to the history of the country. It could be important because of its architecture, its connection to famous people, or its role in past events. Being on the list helps protect these places for future generations to learn from and enjoy.
