The Church of San Andrés (which means Saint Andrew's Church) is a very old and important church located in Madrid, Spain. It's officially recognized as a special historical building, called a Bien de Interés Cultural, since 1995. This means it's protected because of its history and beauty.

A Journey Through Time

This church was built on the remains of an even older church. That first church was actually built where a mosque once stood. This mosque was next to a special tower, which later became part of a palace. Important historical figures like the Catholic Monarchs and Cardinal Cisneros stayed in this palace when they visited Madrid.

Special Connections

The original church was a favorite place for Saint Isidore the Laborer, who is the patron saint of Madrid. His wife, Santa María de la Cabeza, also worshipped there. They lived very close by.

The Chapel of Saint Isidore

Right next to the church, there's a special chapel called the Chapel of San Isidro. This chapel was built exactly where Saint Isidore's house used to be. Its construction started in 1657, after Saint Isidore was made a saint in 1622. The chapel was rebuilt and improved several times, including in 1663, 1669, 1783, and 1789.

Building Style and Art

The church was first built in the beautiful Baroque style. This style is known for its grand and detailed decorations. Architects like José de Villarreal, Pedro de la Torre, and Juan de Lobera worked on its design. Sadly, much of the art and decoration inside the church was damaged in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War.
