The Church of San Pedro de los Francos (in Spanish: Iglesia de San Pedro de los Francos) is a historic church located in the city of Calatayud, Spain. Because of its historical importance, it was named a Bien de Interés Cultural (a special protected landmark) in 1875. The name "de los Francos" means "of the French."
History of the Church
The church was built in the 14th century. It stands on the site of an even older temple. It was founded by King Alfonso I el Batallador after he captured Calatayud during a period known as the Reconquista. The king built the church to thank the French soldiers who helped him.
The church is a great example of Mudéjar style. This is a special type of design found in Spain that mixes Christian and Islamic art styles. It has three long sections called naves and rounded areas at the end called apses.
One of the most curious features of the church is its old Mudéjar tower. Over the centuries, the tower has started to lean over the street, making it a unique sight.
Art and Architecture
The church showcases different art styles from various periods in history.
The Gothic Entrance
The main entrance is built in the Gothic style. It has a tall, pointed arch. On either side of the door are statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Above the door, you can see carvings of Jesus Christ in the center, with the Virgin Mary and Saint John on each side.
Inside the Church
Inside, the main altarpiece, called a retablo, is a stunning example of Baroque art. It was finished in 1654 and features twisting, corkscrew-like columns known as Solomonic columns.
Other chapels in the church have art from the Renaissance period. This style was known for being balanced and realistic. One chapel even features a statue of the Virgin Mary placed inside a small, cave-like grotto.
