The Church of Santa Eulalia de Ujo is a historic church located in the town of Ujo. Ujo is part of the Mieres area in Asturias, Spain. This church has a very interesting past. It combines old and new parts.

A Church with a Long History

The original Church of Santa Eulalia de Ujo was built a very long time ago. It was first built in the 12th century. This means it is over 800 years old! It was built in a style called Romanesque.

What is Romanesque Architecture?

Romanesque architecture was popular in Europe from about 1000 to 1200 AD. Churches built in this style often have thick walls and round arches. They also have strong pillars and large towers. This style made buildings look very solid and grand.

Moving the Church

In 1922, something unusual happened to the church. It had to be moved! This was because a new railroad track was going to be built. The railroad needed the space where the old church stood.

Moving a whole church is a huge task. Instead of tearing it down completely, parts of the old church were carefully taken apart. These pieces were then used to build a new church nearby. This way, the history of the old church could live on.

Old Parts in a New Place

When the church was rebuilt, important parts of the original Romanesque building were used. The main entrance, called the portal, was moved. Parts of the apse were also included. The apse is the rounded end of a church, usually where the altar is.

So, the Church of Santa Eulalia de Ujo you see today is a mix. It has ancient stones and designs from the 12th century. But it also has newer parts from when it was rebuilt in 1922. It stands as a reminder of its long history and the clever way it was preserved.
