History of the Church
People in Toledo believe this church stands where Saint Leocadia of Toledo was born. They say her house had a secret underground room. This room is now a crypt, a small underground space, inside the church. It has a special arched ceiling from the early 1500s.
Building Style and Age
The church and its tower are built in a special style called Mudéjar. This style mixes Christian and Islamic art. The oldest parts of the church date back to the late 1200s.
However, there might have been an even older building here before. Records from the mid-1100s mention a church called "Santa Leocadia within Toledo."
Ancient Stone Pieces
You can still see old stone carvings from the Visigothic period on the church tower and front. These pieces are very old, from a time long before the current church was built.
Next to Santo Domingo el Antiguo
The church was once separated from the Monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo by a street. But during the time of Alfonso X of Castile, a king of Spain, that street was removed when the monastery was made bigger.
