The Church of St Peter the Poor Fisherman is a very old church in the village of Noss Mayo, in Devon, England. It was built way back in 1226. This makes it almost 800 years old! The church is found in an area that used to be called Revelstoke.

This historic building is listed as a Grade I listed building. This means it is a very important building that needs to be protected. It is now looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust. This group takes care of old churches that are no longer used for regular services. The church was officially handed over to the Trust in 1972.

A Look Inside This Historic Church

The Church of St Peter the Poor Fisherman has a long history. Parts of it were built during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. Some parts even show signs of being built during the Saxon times, which was over 1,000 years ago!

Inside the church, you can still see some amazing old features. The side sections, called the aisles, and the entrance porch still have their original carved wooden roofs. These are known as wagon roofs because they look a bit like the inside of a covered wagon. Sadly, the roofs over the rest of the church have fallen down over time.

What is a 'Redundant Church'?

You might wonder what a "redundant church" means. It simply means that the church is no longer needed for regular weekly services. Instead, it is preserved for its history and beauty. The Churches Conservation Trust makes sure these special buildings are kept safe for future generations.

Old Church, New Purpose

In the years 1880–82, a new church was built nearby. This new church was also named St Peter's. Because of this, the older Church of St Peter the Poor Fisherman slowly fell into disrepair. This means it became old and damaged.

Even though it's not used for regular services, the old church is still considered a holy place. Sometimes, special church services are held there during the summer months. It's a unique way to experience history and faith together.
