Chʼiyel was a powerful Maya king. He ruled the city of Sacul, El Petén in what is now Guatemala. His reign lasted from about 760 to 790 AD. Ch'iyel is the only known king of Sacul from that time.

Who Was King Ch'iyel?

Ch'iyel was likely the strongest ruler Sacul ever had. He was involved in many important events. These included wars, special ceremonies, and visits to other kings. During his time, Sacul probably saw its biggest building boom. Many new structures were likely built under his rule.

Important Events During His Reign

Receiving the Mannequin Sceptre

On February 12, 760 AD, a special event happened. King Shield Jaguar II from Ucanal visited Sacul. During this visit, Ch'iyel received his "mannequin sceptre." This was a special object that looked like a small doll. It was a very important symbol. It showed that Ch'iyel was the true and rightful ruler of Sacul.

Visiting Ixkun

Ch'iyel also made important visits to other cities. One such visit was to Ixkun. This trip happened on October 11, 790 AD. To remember this event, a large stone monument was created. It is called Stela 2 of Sacul. This stela shows pictures of both King Ch'iyel and the king of Ixkun. It helps us learn about the connections between these ancient Maya cities.
