CiNii is a special online service from Japan. It works like a huge search engine for academic papers and books. Imagine a giant digital library catalog, but specifically for things found in Japanese university libraries.

This service helps students, teachers, and researchers find important information. It started in April 2005. The National Institute of Informatics (NII) keeps it running and up-to-date.

What CiNii Does

CiNii helps you search through many different collections of information. It looks through databases from the NII itself. These include the NII Electronic Library Service (NII-ELS). It also searches the Citation Database for Japanese Publications (CJP).

CiNii also connects to other important sources. It includes information from the National Diet Library of Japan. This is Japan's national library. It also searches "institutional repositories." These are online collections of research from universities and other organizations.

Finding Information on CiNii

CiNii holds a massive amount of information. It has more than 15 million articles. These articles come from over 3,600 different academic publications. This means you can find a wide range of topics.

You can often find summaries of articles. Sometimes, you can even read the full article directly. This makes it a powerful tool for school projects or learning new things.

Unique Identifiers for Information

To keep everything organized, CiNii uses special codes. Each journal article in its collection gets a unique code. This code is called the NII Article ID, or NAID for short. It's like a special barcode for each article.

Books and other publications have a different type of code. This is called the NII Citation ID (NCID). You might also see it called 書誌ID (shoshi ID) in Japanese. It helps identify specific books or collections.
