Ciara Phillips (born in 1976) is a talented Canadian-Irish artist. She mostly lives and works in Glasgow, United Kingdom. Ciara was born in Ottawa, Canada. She studied art at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. Later, she earned her Master's degree from the Glasgow School of Art.

Her art often uses traditional printmaking methods. She gets a lot of ideas from working with others. She is also inspired by the ideas of artist and teacher Corita Kent. In 2014, Ciara Phillips was nominated for the famous Turner Prize for her art shown at The Showroom in London, England.

Life and Art Career

Ciara Phillips is known for her printmaking. But she uses many different materials in her art. This includes screenprinting, fabrics, photography, and even painting on walls. She often works with other artists, designers, and local community groups. This helps her rethink how art galleries usually work.

Phillips gets much of her inspiration from Corita Kent (1918-1986). Kent was an important artist, teacher, and activist. She was famous for changing advertising slogans and images from the 1960s into new art.

Ciara Phillips started an artist group called Poster Club. She also has an ongoing art project called (Workshop 2010—). This project has been shown many times. Its first showing at The Showroom Gallery in London led to her nomination for the Turner Prize in 2014.

Artist Style

A key part of Ciara Phillips' art is how she creates images. Her work doesn't always show things in a traditional way. Instead, her art suggests that there isn't just one way to understand human experiences.

Printmaking is a very experimental art form. It takes time and often involves working with others. These are all important parts of Phillips' artistic vision. Printing also has a long history of being used for political and social messages. Phillips uses these ideas in her art. She wants to show how art can be a tool for change.

Many of these ideas come from Sister Corita Kent, an American artist and teacher. Working with others is a core part of Phillips' art. It also helps her teach and share ideas.

Selected Artworks

Comrade Objects - Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston

Ciara Phillips had an important exhibition called Comrade Objects. It was held at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, Ontario, in 2016. This show focused on her unique visual style. It also showed how she uses symbols, like many artists who inspire her.

This was her first big exhibition in Canada. It highlighted her interest in working with others. The show included a version of her Workshop (2010 — ongoing) project, which was nominated for the Turner Prize. It also featured art she made with Clive Robertson, a Canadian artist. During this exhibition, Phillips also worked with the Kingston community and Queen's University students.

Workshop (2010–ongoing) - The Showroom, London

As mentioned earlier, Workshop (2010–ongoing) is a continuous project. It's set up as a large workshop and acts as a temporary print studio during an exhibition. It was first shown at the Showroom Gallery in London, England. This project earned Phillips her Turner Prize nomination.

For the first time this work was shown, Phillips invited people from the community and local women's groups to try screenprinting. They worked together with Phillips. She explored how printmaking can be used in new and experimental ways. She also made sure the art connected to what was happening in the gallery and the community.

What We Recognize In Others - CCA Derry Londonderry

What We Recognize In Others was Phillips' first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom. This was after her Turner Prize nomination in 2014. For this art, she screen-printed photos of her friends onto fabric. She then added text and layers of color over the photos. This helped to hide and highlight different parts of the pictures.

She also layered the gallery walls with paintings and fabric. This mirrored the art itself. This work shows the handmade quality of art. It also emphasizes the connections that come from working together. Even though Ciara is known for her collaborative art, she created this exhibition all by herself. It shows how feminism influences her work. It also highlights her interest in printmaking as a tool for social and political change throughout history.
