Cibecue Creek: A Special Arizona River

Where is Cibecue Creek?

Cibecue Creek is found entirely within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This reservation is a homeland for the Apache people. The valley around Cibecue Creek is especially important to the Cibecue Apache, a group of the Western Apache. The small town of Cibecue is also located right on the creek. A significant historical event, known as the Battle of Cibecue Creek, took place in this area.

How Big is the Creek's Area?

The area that drains into Cibecue Creek is called its watershed. This watershed covers about 750 square kilometres (190,000 acres) of land. Water for the creek comes from forested hills, including parts of the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forests. From these hills, the creek flows until it joins the larger Salt River.

What Happened to the Creek in the Past?

In the 1960s, a special program was started to manage the land around Cibecue Creek. This program was run by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a government agency. The goal was to change the plants and trees growing near the creek. This was done to try and manage the water flow better. Some of the methods used, like removing many plants and using machines, were quite strong and caused some disagreement at the time.
