Cicely Ethel Wilkinson (born June 5, 1882 or 1883 – died May 27, 1967) was a brave British pilot. She was a pioneer in aviation, meaning she was one of the first people to do something new and important in flying. She might have been the only woman to become a qualified pilot in Britain during the First World War. During the war, she also worked as a driver for the French Red Cross. She may have even driven ambulances on the battlefields.

Early Life

Cicely Ethel Cardwell was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. Her birthday was June 5, either in 1882 or 1883. Her parents were Colonel William Alexander Cardwell and Lilian Cardwell. When she was 20, in 1903, Cicely married Henry Edward Thornton Wilkinson. They lived in Malton, Yorkshire, for a while.

Flying During World War I

From April to October 1915, Cicely worked as a driver for the French Red Cross. She helped transport people and supplies. She might have also driven ambulances on the Western Front, which was a major battle area.

On September 11, 1916, Cicely achieved something amazing. She earned her pilot's license! She learned to fly a Caudron biplane at the Beatty School in Hendon Aerodrome. This made her a certified pilot with Royal Aero Club Aviator Certificate number 3522. She was possibly the only woman in Britain to become a pilot during the entire First World War.

After the war, Cicely Wilkinson received two special awards. These were the British War Medal and the British Victory Medal. These medals recognized her important service during the war.

Life After the War

Cicely's love for cars and driving continued even after the war ended. Between 1937 and 1938, she owned a powerful Aston Martin 2.0-Litre 15/98 Tourer car. At that time, it was quite unusual for a woman to own and drive such a strong, fancy car. People even called her "the intrepid Mrs Wilkinson," which means brave and adventurous.

Cicely Ethel Wilkinson passed away in Sussex on May 27, 1967.
