Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cicero was once a small town in Defiance County, Ohio. It is now considered an extinct town, which means it no longer exists as a populated place.

The Story of Cicero

Cicero began its life in 1846. At that time, a sawmill was built there. A sawmill is a factory that cuts down large trees into lumber, which is wood used for building.

The town grew because of the sawmill. However, as time went on, all the trees in the nearby forests were cut down. When there were no more trees to cut, the sawmill had to close.

After the sawmill closed, people started to move away from Cicero. The town's population became very small, and eventually, no one lived there anymore.

Cicero also had its own post office. It opened in 1852 and helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open until 1901, when it was finally closed down.
