Cincinnati's Historic Gas Lamps
Cincinnati's gas lamps are special because they show us how technology was used in daily life a long time ago. They represent how cities started using new inventions in the mid-1800s.
Lighting Up the City
The city of Cincinnati began installing streetlights in 1837. This happened because a new company, the "Cincinnati Gas Light and Coke Company," was formed. By 1875, there were 5,290 public gas lamps in the city. These lamps were connected by 170 miles of pipes.
Where to Find Them Today
Today, about 1,172 gas lights are still in use. You can find them in thirteen of Cincinnati's neighborhoods. Some are also in parts of Columbia Township and Sycamore Township. The historic district includes 1,109 of these lamps. The oldest ones were put in place way back in 1843.
