The Cincinnati Work House and Hospital was a special building in Camp Washington, Cincinnati, Ohio. It was built a long time ago, between 1867 and 1869. This important building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 3, 1980.

A Look Back: Cincinnati Work House History

The City Work House was located on Colerain Avenue. This area was once called Camp Washington. It was used as a meeting spot for Ohio soldiers during the Mexican War. The building itself was very large. It was about 510 feet long and five stories tall. It was also between 54 and 60 feet wide.

Designing a Big Building

The Work House was designed by architects named Adams and Hannaford. Robert Allison helped oversee the building process. He was in charge of the building committee for the city council. The construction happened between 1866 and 1890. It cost about half a million dollars, which was a huge amount of money back then!

What Was the Work House For?

The Cincinnati Work House served as a place for people who needed to learn new skills. It also helped them get back on track. In a report from 1904, the building had 606 rooms. Each year, about 2,500 to 3,000 people would stay there. They would work and learn trades. This helped them become productive members of society.

From Old Building to New Center

The Work House building was used for many years. However, the people staying there were moved out in the late 1980s. The old building was then taken down in 1990. Today, a new facility stands on the same spot. It is called the River City Correctional Center. This center continues to help people in the community.

The Work House on the Big Screen

Did you know the Cincinnati Work House was once a movie set? The 1989 film Lock Up was filmed there. This movie starred famous actor Sylvester Stallone. It's cool to think a historic building in Cincinnati made it into a Hollywood movie!

Preserving History: Work House Artifacts

Even though the building is gone, some parts of its history remain. Several items from the Work House are now on display. You can see them at the Hamilton County Justice Center. These items include an old door from one of the rooms. There is also an old book that listed everyone who stayed there. These artifacts help us remember the building's past.
