Life and Career
Cindy Breakspeare was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her father, Louis Cameron Breakspeare, was Jamaican, and her mother, Marguerite Cochrane, was Canadian. She has three brothers and one sister.
When Cindy was four years old, her family moved to Jamaica. She went to Immaculate Conception High School and finished in 1973. As a teenager, Cindy took part in several beauty pageants. These included Miss Jamaica Body Beautiful and Miss Universe Bikini.
Winning Miss World
In 1976, Cindy was invited to join the Miss World competition in London. At that time, the Jamaican government had rules against joining competitions that included South Africa. This was because of South Africa's apartheid system, which was unfair to many people.
However, Cindy accepted the invitation. On November 19, 1976, she won the Miss World title. She was the second Jamaican to achieve this honor.
Personal Life
Cindy Breakspeare has three children. Her son, Damian Marley, is a well-known reggae musician.
In 1981, Cindy married senator Tom Tavares-Finson. They had two children together: a son named Christian (born in 1982) and a daughter named Leah (born in 1986). Cindy and Tom later divorced in 1994.
In 1999, Cindy Breakspeare married musician Rupert Bent II. She has continued her career as a recording artist and a business owner. She started a Rastafarian craft store in Jamaica called Ital Craf. Cindy has four grandsons from her three children. She remains a recognized person in Jamaica and sometimes appears in local media.
