What Does the Cinnamon Ground Dove Look Like?
The cinnamon ground dove is a medium-sized bird. It usually grows to be about 22–24 centimeters (around 9 inches) long. It weighs between 121 and 137 grams, which is about as much as a small apple.
These doves have a reddish, blush-like mark on their heads. Their upper bodies are covered in light brown and grey feathers. A bright yellow patch on their belly stands out, surrounded by white feathers. Some of these doves even have pretty blue markings on their heads and bodies!
Their reddish backs and wings have unique pale grey-blue patterns. These patterns help them stand out from other birds in the same family. They mostly live in lowland forests and hilly areas.
What Sounds Does This Dove Make?
The cinnamon ground dove has a soft and gentle voice. Its call sounds like a faint, quiet trill. It also makes a soft purring sound. This purr can last for a few seconds, making it a very peaceful bird to listen to.
What Does the Cinnamon Ground Dove Eat?
The cinnamon ground dove finds most of its food on the ground. Its diet mainly includes small insects. However, it also enjoys eating fallen fruits and seeds. Sometimes, it even finds ground worms to munch on!
This bird is a skilled scavenger. It searches through the leaf litter that covers the forest floor. This is how it finds most of its meals. It really depends on the food sources available right on the ground.
Different Kinds of Cinnamon Ground Doves
Just like people can have different family groups, animals can have different "subspecies." These are groups within the same species that have slight differences, often because they live in different areas. Here are the known subspecies of the cinnamon ground dove:
- Gallicolumba rufigula alaris
- Gallicolumba rufigula helviventris
- Gallicolumba rufigula orientalis
- Gallicolumba rufigula rufigula
- Gallicolumba rufigula septentrionalis
