The Start of Circo Price
The story of Circo Price began a long time ago. The very first circus was not in its current spot. It was located in a park called Jardin de las Delicias. This park was at the corner of two streets, Paseo de Recoletos and calle de la Veterinaria. Today, that street is known as calle Barbara de Braganza.
Building a Permanent Home
In 1880, a man named Thomas Price decided to build a special place for the circus. Thomas Price was part of a famous English family of performers. They were known as the Price Brothers, and they were amazing equilibrist clowns. An equilibrist is someone who is very good at balancing. Thomas Price got permission to build a permanent circus hall and theatre. He chose a spot in the Plaza del Rey, which means "King's Square." This new building became the Circo Price we know today.
The "Circo de Parish" Era
For many years, people often called the Circo Price the "Circo de Parish." This was because of its manager, Leonard Parish. He took over from his father, William Parish, who was also a well-known show organizer. Leonard Parish managed the circus until 1930. During this time, the theatre became a very important place for zarzuelas. A zarzuela is a type of Spanish musical play that combines singing, speaking, and dancing.
