Ciril Zlobec (born July 4, 1925 – died August 24, 2018) was a famous Slovene poet, writer, and translator. He also worked as a journalist and was involved in politics. He is best known for his many poetry books. In 1990, he became an important member of the Slovenian government. This was a very important time for Slovenia as it was becoming an independent country.

Life and Achievements

Early Life and Education

Ciril Zlobec was born in 1925 in a village called Ponikve. This area was part of Italy at the time, but it is now in Slovenia. He went to school in the cities of Gorizia and Koper.

In 1941, he was kicked out of school. This happened because he wrote poems in the Slovene language. At that time, the Italian government wanted everyone to speak only Italian. Writing in Slovene was not allowed.

World War II and Beyond

During World War II, Ciril Zlobec joined a group called the Slovene Liberation Front. This group fought for Slovenia's freedom. He also briefly joined the Partisans, who were fighters against the occupation.

After the war, he finished his studies. He graduated from the University of Ljubljana in 1953. He then worked as a journalist and a translator. He published many collections of his poems and also wrote two novels. In 1989, he became a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. This is a very high honor for smart and talented people in Slovenia.

A New Voice in Poetry

Ciril Zlobec became well-known in 1953. He was one of four poets who wrote a special book of poems called "The Poems of the Four" (Pesmi štirih). This book was very important for Slovene culture after the war. It showed a new way of writing. Before this, writers were often told to use a strict style called "Socialist realism." This style meant art had to show only positive things about the government. "The Poems of the Four" helped writers express themselves more freely. The other three poets in this project were Kajetan Kovič, Janez Menart, and Tone Pavček.

Awards and Recognition

Ciril Zlobec received many important awards for his poetry. In 1965, he won the Prešeren Foundation Award for his poetry book Najina oaza (Our Oasis). In 1982, he won the even bigger Grand Prešeren Award for his collection Glas (Voice). He also won the Veronika Award in 2000 for his book Samo ta dan imam.

From the 1970s to the 1980s, he was also the editor of an important cultural magazine called Sodobnost.

Role in Politics

In 1990, Ciril Zlobec joined the Socialist Party of Slovenia. He was successfully elected to the Slovenian Presidency. This was a group that advised the President of the Republic. He was seen as a close friend and supporter of the President, Milan Kučan. After 1992, he stopped being involved in politics.

Ciril Zlobec was the father of Jaša Zlobec, who is also an activist, author, translator, and politician.
