Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Citizens Bank Financial Center is a famous building in downtown Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. A well-known architect named D.H. Burnham designed it. The building was finished in 1911. A bright, lit-up sign has been on top of it since 1912.

About the Building

Its Design

This building is 13 stories tall. It reaches about 170 feet (52 m) (52 meters) into the sky. The very top story was added later, in 1926. It was first built for the Miner's National Bank. Over the years, other banks like United Penn Bank and Mellon Bank owned it.

The building has a special "H" shape. This shape is made by a part that goes inward. Look closely at the second floor. You can see a sculpture of a nesting eagle there. There is also a flagpole. These are visible from Franklin Street. Near the very top, there is a decorated band called a frieze. It has cool lion heads on it. Many other interesting decorations climb up the building's front.

The Famous Sign

In 1912, the Miners National Bank put a lit-up sign on the roof. Even though the building has changed owners, the sign has stayed. Today, the green Citizens Bank sign is still there. It sits more than 200 feet (61 m) (61 meters) above street level.

In 2013, Citizens Bank moved out of the building. They had been there for over ten years. Now, the building has offices and apartments inside. But the bright Citizens Bank sign still lights up the sky.
