City Hall in Salem, Massachusetts, is a very important historic building. It's where the city's government makes decisions. This beautiful building was constructed in 1838. It is known for its Greek Revival style. City Hall is located in the heart of the Downtown Salem District. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This means it's recognized as a special historical site.

The City Council Chamber Room is on the second floor. This is where the city council meets twice a month. Other city groups also hold their meetings here.

Building History

Salem City Hall was built between 1837 and 1838. Mayor Leverett Saltonstall oversaw its construction. The first stone was placed on September 6, 1837. Inside, they buried local newspapers and the Mayor's speech. They also included the new City Charter.

The building was made larger in 1878. An extension was added to the back. This change did not alter how it looked from the street. The extension doubled the building's size. It also brought all city offices under one roof.

How City Hall Was Funded

In 1837, the United States government had extra money. This money was given to different states. The states then shared it with their cities and towns. Salem received almost $34,000. City Hall was built using this money. The building and its furnishings cost about $22,878. This means it was paid for without taxing the citizens. It's one of the few city buildings built this way!

First Occupancy and Design

The City Council first used the building on May 31, 1838. A special dedication ceremony was held on June 8, 1838.

Since 1837, City Hall has been the main place for decisions in Salem. The building has two stories. It was designed in the Greek Revival style. The original building was 32 feet high, 45 feet wide, and 68 feet long.

The sides and back of the building are made of plain brick. The front is made of dressed granite. The front has four large columns called pilasters. They are on each corner and on either side of the middle section. The tall windows have six panes on top and six on the bottom. A short flight of granite steps leads to the main entrance. A cast iron lamp hangs above the door. The tall front doors are made of mahogany. They have brass studs outlining the panels.

Modern Updates

In 1979, an expansion was added to hold city records. In 2010, an elevator was installed at the back. This made City Hall accessible for people with disabilities. The U.S. Government paid $300,000 for these improvements.

A $2 million restoration project began in 2012. This project focused on the building's exterior. It involved repairing or replacing the brick walls, roof, and windows. The work was completed in 2013.
