Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The City Mission movement began in Glasgow, Scotland, in January 1826. It was started by David Nasmith, who founded the Glasgow City Mission. This movement created groups that worked with churches and other Christian organizations. Their goal was to help people in need, both with their spirits and their daily lives.

These groups are often called "City Missions," "Gospel Missions," or "Rescue Missions."

History of City Missions

David Nasmith traveled to the United States and Canada in 1830. While there, he helped set up 31 missions with the support of various helpful groups. He also started missions in France, as well as the London City Mission, the London Female Mission, and the Dublin Christian Mission. He helped create many other similar ministries too.

The first big meeting for City Missions from all over the world happened in Sydney, Australia, in 1988. It was organized by the Sydney City Mission, which is now known as Mission Australia.

At a later meeting in Birmingham, England, in 1991, the City Mission World Association (CMWA) was formed. This group helps connect City Missions around the globe.

City Mission Groups Around the World

Today, there are national groups that help organize City Missions in different countries:

  • Australia: Mission Australia was formed in 1996. City Missions had been helping people across Australia since 1854.
  • USA: The Association of Gospel Rescue Missions was founded in 1913.
  • UK and Ireland: The City Mission Movement UK (formerly called the British Association of City Missions) helps missions in these areas.
