Ciudad Vieja means "Old City" in Spanish. It is an important archaeological site in El Salvador. You can find it about 10 kilometers south of Suchitoto. This site was the very first place where the city of San Salvador was built. San Salvador is now the capital city of El Salvador.

What is Ciudad Vieja?
Ciudad Vieja is a historical place. It shows where the first Spanish settlement of San Salvador was located. Spanish conquistadors, who were explorers and soldiers, built it in 1525. They were trying to take control of the land.
Why was Ciudad Vieja abandoned?
The settlement did not last long. It was abandoned just three years later, in 1528. The Spanish then moved San Salvador to a new location. This new spot was safer and had better resources.
