Kids Encyclopedia Facts

CIVAC is a special area in Mexico, near the city of Cuernavaca in the state of Morelos. Its name comes from Spanish: Ciudad Industrial del Valle de Cuernavaca, which means "Industrial City of the Cuernavaca Valley." It's like a big park where many factories and businesses are located, and it also has homes for people.

CIVAC covers about 2.3 square kilometers (230 hectares). It's located in the municipality of Jiutepec, just a short drive (about 10 minutes) east of Cuernavaca. The weather in CIVAC is usually warm, like a subtropical climate, with rain mostly in the summer. The average temperature is around 21°C (70°F), but it can sometimes get as cool as 0.5°C (33°F) or as hot as 40°C (104°F). CIVAC has two main parts: an industrial area for factories and a residential area for homes.

History of CIVAC

The idea for CIVAC started a long time ago. The very first factory, called Mexama, opened its doors in 1961. A few years later, on March 4, 1966, the "Industrial City" was officially created. This happened because the President of Mexico at the time, Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, made it a special project. In the same year, a famous car company, Nissan Mexicana, built its first car assembly plant outside of Japan right here in CIVAC.

What Makes CIVAC Important?

CIVAC is a very important place for the economy of the state of Morelos. Many different companies, both from Mexico and other countries, have their factories and offices here. Some well-known companies include Roche, Unilever, NEC, Baxter International, and GlaxoSmithKline. There are actually more than 120 companies in CIVAC!

Nissan is still a big part of CIVAC. It's the largest company in the industrial park. Nissan has two manufacturing plants in CIVAC and employs more than 2,000 people. This means many cars are made right here!

How CIVAC is Managed

To help manage the area, an organization called PROCIVAC was created in 1972. PROCIVAC stands for "CIVAC Owners Association." At first, it managed all public services in both the industrial and residential areas. But since 1993, its main job has been to take care of the industrial zone.

PROCIVAC handles important services like:

  • Making sure there's enough water.
  • Collecting trash.
  • Keeping the roads in good condition.
  • Taking care of the green spaces and plants.
  • Making sure public lights are working.
  • Putting up signs.
  • Maintaining the general buildings and systems.

PROCIVAC also helps with new building projects and gives advice on how to keep factories safe and protect the environment. They have a special center called CCEC (Civac Emergency Control Center) that helps prevent and manage industrial emergencies. They also have ECCACIV, which is a very modern plant that cleans wastewater.

Life in CIVAC

People who live in CIVAC have easy access to many services they need every day. There are both public and private schools for all ages, from daycare to high school and even technical centers. There are also medical clinics, places of worship, parks, banks, and shopping areas. It's easy to get around because there's a good and affordable transportation system that connects CIVAC to Cuernavaca and Jiutepec.
