Clan Gayre facts for kids
Clan Gayre or Clan Gair is a group that says it is a Scottish clan from the Highlands.
How the Clan Started
A man named Robert Gayre of Gayre and Nigg (whose original name was Robert Gair) started this clan. He was the father of the current chief. He created the clan after World War II.
Most of what we know about Clan Gayre comes from Robert Gayre himself. It seems he made up the clan and its history.
Robert Gayre claimed to be the Chief of "Clan Gayre" and "Clan Gayre and Nigg." In 1947, he wrote a book called Gayre's Booke. In it, he tried to show that his family had a long history as clan leaders.
However, before Robert Gayre, no clan or family group called Gayre was ever mentioned in old records.
A book called World Orders of Knighthood and Merit by Guy Stair Sainty mentions Robert Gayre. It calls him the "first Chief of the newly formed Clan Gayre."
The Glasgow Herald newspaper wrote about Robert Gayre in 1975. It said he was unique because he was able to create a Scottish clan from nothing. He gave it traditions, special ceremonies, and rules.
In 2017, a family history expert named Anthony J. Camp found something interesting. He showed that Robert Gayre himself did not have a direct male family line from earlier families with the Gayre name.
Clan Chief
The person who currently calls himself the chief of Clan Gayre is Reinold Gayre of Gayre and Nigg.
