What Does Clanculus albugo Look Like?
The shell of the Clanculus albugo snail is small and shaped like a cone. It has a rounded, cone-shaped bottom. The shell often looks shiny, almost like resin.
Shell Patterns and Colors
If you look closely, you can see many faint lines on the shell. These lines show how the shell grew over time. There are also some faint spiral patterns. Two of these spirals form a weak double ridge around the edge of the shell.
The shell is usually a light, clear brownish color. It has cool patterns of white and crimson spots. These spots are found near the top edge of each shell section and around the middle. Sometimes, the crimson color forms tiny zigzag lines down the shell. You might also see delicate spirals of alternating crimson and white specks on both the top and bottom parts of the shell.
Shell Shape and Openings
The top part of the shell, called the spire, is not very tall. It has a smooth, curved shape and a blunt, round tip (apex). The shell has five sections, called whorls, that are rounded and slope downwards. They are flat around the middle and rounded at the base. The lines between these sections (sutures) are thin and slightly sunken.
The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is round and quite large. The outer edge of this opening (lip) is thin. The inner lip is also thin and curves slightly inwards. There is a wide, shallow funnel-shaped hole at the base of the shell, called the umbilicus. This funnel narrows into a small, deep hole.
Where Does Clanculus albugo Live?
This sea snail lives only in Australia. You can find it off the coast of New South Wales. This means it is "endemic" to that area, which means it naturally lives there and nowhere else in the world.
