Clanculus undatoides is a type of sea snail. It's a small mollusk that lives in the sea. This snail belongs to a group called gastropods. It is part of the family Trochidae, which are often called "top snails" because of their shell shape.
What Does This Snail Look Like?
This snail has a shell that is about 10 millimeters (or 1 centimeter) tall. Its width is also around 10 millimeters. The shell is quite small and solid. It has a shape like a cone, but it's a bit rounded.
The shell is not see-through. It is usually a reddish-pink color. You might also see some faint purple spots on it. The shell has about five and a half flat whorls. These are the spiral turns of the shell.
Each whorl has six rows of small, round bumps. The row at the very bottom is the smallest. These bumps get a little bigger as they go up towards the suture. The suture is like a groove that separates the whorls.
The bottom of the shell is flat. It has eight spiral lines of tiny, pink bumps. The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is shaped like a diamond. It has a thick edge, or lip, that has ridges inside.
The central pillar of the shell, called the columella, has two blunt bumps. It also has some smaller, faded teeth in between. The snail's belly-button-like opening, called the umbilicus, is narrow and white. It has a clear white edge around it.
Where Do These Snails Live?
This marine snail is endemic to Australia. This means it is found only in Australia. You can find Clanculus undatoides living off the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria.
