The Clara Barton Homestead is a special place in Oxford, Massachusetts. It is also known as the Clara Barton Birthplace Museum. This historic house celebrates the life of Clara Barton (1821-1912). She was a very important person who started the American Red Cross.

The homestead was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. You can visit the museum during certain seasons or by making an appointment. The house has been carefully restored to look just like it did when Clara Barton lived there.

About Clara Barton's Childhood Home

The Clara Barton Homestead is located in northern Oxford. It is on the land of the Barton Center for Diabetes Education. This center is at the corner of Clara Barton and Ennis Roads.

The house is a classic American style home. It has one and a half stories and is made of wood. It has a sloped roof and a chimney in the middle. The outside walls are covered with clapboards. The front of the house has five windows. They are placed evenly around the main door. Above the door, there is a small window called a transom. A smaller part of the house extends to the right. It has a porch where it joins the main building. A barn from the 1800s stands next to the house.

History of the Homestead

Stephen Barton, Clara's father, built this house in 1818. Clara Barton was born here in 1821. She lived in this home until 1853.

In 1921, a group called the Unitarian-Universalist Federation of Women bought the house. They turned it into a museum to honor Clara Barton. The land around the house is now part of the Barton Center. This center runs a summer camp for children who have diabetes.
