Clara Belle Williams (born October 29, 1885 – died July 3, 1993) was an important American educator. She made history by becoming the first African-American person to graduate from what is now New Mexico State University. She was also a dedicated teacher and raised three sons who all became doctors.

Early Life and Education

Clara Belle Drisdale was born in Plum, Texas. This was on October 29, 1885. From a young age, she showed a strong desire to learn.

She earned a scholarship to attend the Prairie View Normal and Independent College. In 1905, she graduated as the top student in her class. This was a big achievement.

In 1910, Clara Belle continued her studies. She went to The University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. She married Jasper Williams in 1917. Together, they had three sons.

Breaking Barriers in College

In 1928, Clara Belle Williams enrolled at the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. This school is now known as New Mexico State University. She worked hard for many years.

In 1937, at 51 years old, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She was the very first African-American person to graduate from this college. This was a huge step forward for civil rights and education.

During her time as a student, Clara Belle faced unfair treatment. Professors did not allow her to sit inside the lecture halls. She had to take notes and attend classes from the hallway. Despite these challenges, she kept going. She even continued taking graduate classes into the 1950s.

A Dedicated Teacher

Clara Belle Williams spent many years teaching. She taught at Lincoln High School in Las Cruces. This school opened in an A.M.E. Church. It was created after African-American students were removed from integrated schools in the 1920s. State laws at the time allowed schools to be separated by race.

Later, she taught for over twenty years at the Booker T. Washington School in Las Cruces. This school opened in the 1930s. She helped many young students learn and grow.

Family and Lasting Impact

Clara Belle Williams was also a proud mother. All three of her sons grew up to become doctors. Their names were Jasper Jr., James, and Charles. She even worked as a receptionist for her sons' medical practices.

Her legacy continues to inspire people. In 1961, New Mexico State University honored her. They named a street on their campus after her. In 1977, she was recognized by the National Education Association. She was inducted into their teachers' hall of fame.

In 1980, New Mexico State University gave her an honorary doctorate degree. This was a special award. The university also apologized for the unfair way she was treated as a student. In 2005, the university's English department building was renamed Clara Belle Williams Hall. Today, New Mexico State University offers a scholarship in her memory. This scholarship helps new students pursue their education.
