Biography
Clara Passafari was born in Buenos Aires in 1930. When she was very young, she moved to Santa Fe, Argentina with her parents. Their names were Elizabeth Badolato and Italo Passafari.
Clara went to high school at the Institute of Our Lady of Calvary. In 1947, she became a "Maestra Normal Nacional," which means she was qualified to be a teacher. Later, she moved to Rosario, Santa Fe. There, she studied at the National University of Rosario (UNR). She earned a degree as a Professor of Philosophy and Letters.
She married Eduardo Gutierrez. They had four children together: Clara Monica, Laura Inés, Sergio, and Claudia.
Clara Passafari earned more degrees in Sociology and Argentine Literature. She also got a doctorate in Philosophy and Letters. In 1975, she became a Cultural Manager for the Organization of American States. This meant she helped manage cultural projects for many countries in the Americas.
For seven years, she was the director of University Extension at UNR. From 1971 to 1992, she was a full-time researcher. She studied old cultures, oral traditions (stories passed down by speaking), and folklore. Folklore is the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community.
In Rosario, she worked for 19 years with the Fondo Nacional de las Artes. There, she became an expert in folklore with Augusto Raúl Cortázar. She also helped lead the Revista Argentina de Política cultural (Argentina Journal of Cultural Policy). Clara Passafari taught in Argentina, the US, and Europe. She taught about folklore, education, and how to keep cultural traditions alive.
She passed away in Rosario in 1994.
Honors and Awards
Clara Passafari received many awards for her work. In 1984, the Konex Foundation named her one of the top five Argentine experts in folklore. In 1989, she received the "Recognition Award Alicia Moreau de Justo."
Her Books
Clara Passafari wrote many books during her life. Her books covered topics like literature, folklore, and traditional crafts. Some of her works also included poetry. She wrote about how folklore can be used in education and how to preserve cultural heritage.
