The Clark Homestead is a very old and special house located in Lebanon, Connecticut. It was built around 1708, making it one of the oldest buildings in Lebanon! This historic home was once owned by James Clark, who was a brave soldier in the American Revolutionary War. Because of its important history, the Clark Homestead was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

What is the Clark Homestead Like?

The Clark Homestead sits on about 5 acres of land. It is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the main village area of Lebanon. The house has two and a half stories and is made of wood. It has a classic "saltbox" shape, which means the back roof slopes down very far. This style was common for homes built in New England a long time ago.

The house has a large chimney in the middle. There's also an extra part, called an ell, that was added to the back in the 1800s. The front door is in the center. Above the door, there's a special window with seven small panes of glass. Inside, the house has a typical old-fashioned layout. There's a narrow, winding staircase right when you walk in. The rooms on either side of the entrance are called parlors. One of the bedrooms upstairs has a beautiful fireplace. It has fancy carved columns next to it.

Who Lived in the Clark Homestead?

The land where the Clark Homestead stands was first bought in 1700 by Daniel Clark. His grandson, Moses Clark, received the land in 1708. Moses then built the first part of this house. This original part included the big central chimney and three sections of the house.

Around 1750, the house was made bigger. It was probably Moses's son, James Clark, who added more to the house. He made it five sections wide and added the long, sloping back part.

James Clark was a very important person in the family. He fought in the American Revolutionary War. He was part of famous battles like the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of White Plains. James Clark lived to be 95 years old! He even attended the special event when the Bunker Hill Monument was dedicated. This monument honors the soldiers who fought in that important battle.
