Claudia Morgado Escanilla (born in 1962) is a talented filmmaker, writer, and producer from Latino-Canadian background. She has worked on many film festivals and also on commercial projects. Claudia Morgado was a script supervisor for popular movies and TV shows. These include The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), Hyena Road, and Legends of Tomorrow.

Morgado has directed ten short films. She is very well known for her short film Unbound (1995). This film won five awards, including the Teddy Award for Best Short Film in 1996. She is also famous for her short film No Bikini (2007). It won best short film awards at the San Francisco Frameline Film Festival (2008) and Switzerland's Pink Apple Award (2008).

Her Early Life and Studies

Claudia Morgado Escanilla was born in 1962 in Santiago, Chile. She moved to Canada in 1986. In 1991, she earned her BFA degree from Concordia University in Montreal. She also studied at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Later, she moved to Vancouver. There, she received her first grant to write and direct Unbound.

From 1999 to 2000, she completed a special film program. This was the Cineplex Entertainment Film Program (Directors' Lab) at the Canadian Film Centre. Claudia Morgado also earned her MA degree from the University of British Columbia in 2012.

Her Amazing Film Career

Claudia Morgado's documentary short film Unbound won many awards. It received the Teddy award from the Berlin International Film Festival. It also won Best Foreign Film at the Festival de Femmes in Paris. Other awards included The Isabella Lindell Award and The Jury Award. It also got a Certificate of Merit from the Chicago International Film Festival. After winning these awards, Unbound was shown at over 100 film festivals. Many universities also bought copies for their video archives.

Morgado kept making short films. In 1996, she directed Angustia (Anguish). This film was shown at over 50 festivals. It won the Jury Award at the Yorkton Film Festival. It also received a Special Mention in the Czech Republic.

In 2002, Morgado went back to the West Coast. She co-wrote and directed the film Bitten. This short film won Best Director and Best Supporting Actress awards. These were from the New York International Film and Video Festival. It also won the Women in Film Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Her short film No Bikini was finished in 2009. This film was shown at many international festivals. These included The Berlin International Film Festival and TIFF. It received more than 18 awards and special mentions. One big award was the Grand Jury Prize at the PlanetOut Festival. This award was announced at the Sundance film festival. Claudia's work in film has been recognized by many people and festivals.

In 2003, a book called Women Filmmaker’s Refocusing was published. It had a chapter about Claudia Morgado's work. Claudia was also nominated for the Shavick Award. This award is for the most promising Western Canadian Filmmaker. In 2005, the National Archives of Canada asked for copies of Claudia’s award-winning films. They wanted to add them to their permanent collection.
