Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Clayton Milborne (born after 1676 – 1726) was an English politician from the 1700s. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament. He represented the area of Monmouth Boroughs from 1708 to 1715.

Milborne lived in places like Bloomsbury Square and St. Giles-in-the-Fields in Middlesex, and also at Judde House in Ospringe, Kent.

Early Life and Family

Clayton Milborne was the oldest son of John Milborne. His mother was Mary Emma Bishop. His father was connected to the Inner Temple, which is a historic place in London where lawyers are trained. Clayton himself joined the Inner Temple in 1689, following in his father's footsteps. He took over his father's affairs in 1699.

In 1714, Clayton Milborne married Rebecca Johnson. They had two sons and one daughter.

Political Career

Milborne was a member of the Tory Party, one of the main political groups in England at the time. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Monmouth Boroughs in 1708. He ran without anyone opposing him, meaning he was easily elected. He had the support of a powerful person called the Duke of Beaufort.

As an MP, Milborne often voted with his Tory party. For example, in 1710, he voted against the removal of Dr. Sacheverell from his position, which was a big political debate at the time. He was re-elected without opposition in 1710 and again in 1713.

Milborne was known as a "Tory patriot." This meant he was a strong supporter of his party's ideas. He spoke out against how the government had been managed before his party came to power. He also opposed continuing a war that England was involved in at the time. He was part of a group of Tory MPs called the October Club. In 1713, he supported a bill about trade with France. He did not run for election in 1715.

Besides being an MP, Milborne also worked as a Conservator of the Bedford Level from 1701 until he died. This role involved managing and maintaining a large area of drained land in eastern England.

Later Life and Death

Clayton Milborne passed away at his home in Kent on September 13, 1726. He was buried near his father at St Luke's parish church in Chelsea.
