Clemente de Torres was a Spanish painter from the Baroque period. He was born Clemente de Torvisco y Escobar on November 23, 1662, and passed away in 1730. He was known for his beautiful paintings, even though not many of his works are still known today.

Early Life and Training

Clemente de Torres began his journey as a painter around 1680. He learned his skills from a famous artist named Juan de Valdés Leal. Clemente de Torres was greatly influenced by his teacher, and you can see a similar style in his own paintings.

What is Baroque Art?

Baroque art was a popular style of art, music, and architecture that started in the early 1600s. It was known for being very dramatic, detailed, and full of emotion. Artists used strong colors and lots of movement to tell stories in their paintings. Clemente de Torres painted in this exciting style.

His Works

Even though not many of Clemente de Torres's paintings have been found, some important ones are known. For example, he painted six apostles on the pillars of the San Pablo Church in Seville, Spain. These paintings show how much he learned from his teacher, Juan de Valdés Leal.

Life in Madrid and Cádiz

In 1724, Clemente de Torres traveled to the Court of Madrid. The "Court" was where the king and queen lived and worked, and it was a very important place for artists. While there, he became friends with Antonio Palomino, who was the official painter for the royal family. Clemente de Torres even wrote a poem praising his new friend.

After his visit to Madrid, Clemente de Torres returned to Cádiz, a city in southern Spain. He continued to paint there until he passed away in 1730.
