Clementina Ródenas Villena was born on May 11, 1949. She is a Spanish politician from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). She served as the Mayor of Valencia, a big city in Spain, from 1989 to 1991.

Early Life and Education

Clementina Ródenas went to high school at the Requena Institute. After that, she studied Economics and Business at the University of Valencia starting in 1966. She worked hard and earned her PhD in Economics in 1978. This was a special achievement because she was the first woman to get a PhD at that university! In 1979, after passing a special test, she became a full professor (a top teacher) of Economic History.

Political Career

Joining Politics

In 1975, Clementina Ródenas joined the Socialist Party of the Valencian Country and a workers' union called Unión General de Trabajadores. From 1979 to 1985, she was part of the PSPV-PSOE's finance committee. This was after the PSPV party joined the larger PSOE party in 1978.

Becoming Mayor

Between 1983 and 1989, Clementina was a city council member in charge of finances. She was also the first deputy mayor in the city government of Valencia. This team was led by her party friend, Ricard Pérez Casado.

When Ricard Pérez Casado stepped down at the end of 1988, Clementina Ródenas was chosen to be the new mayor. It was a very close election! She won by just one vote against another politician, Vicente González Lizondo. Clementina got 14 votes, while her opponent got 13.

After the Mayoral Term

Clementina Ródenas ran for mayor again in the 1991 local elections. She won many more votes than her closest rival, Rita Barberá. Clementina received 45,000 more votes! However, her party did not win enough seats to have a full majority in the city council. She won 13 out of 33 council seats. Because of this, other parties, the Partido Popular and Unión Valenciana, formed an agreement. This allowed Rita Barberá to become the new mayor instead.

Even though she was no longer mayor, Clementina Ródenas remained active in politics. From 1991 to 1995, she was the leader of the opposition in the Valencia City Council. She also became the president of the Valencia Provincial Council, which is a regional government body. She also represented Spanish cities and towns in the Council of European Regions. In April 1994, she was chosen to be a member of the Executive Committee of her party, the PSPV-PSOE.
