Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Clems, California is a fascinating ghost town located in Santa Cruz County. It sits about 790 feet (241 meters) above sea level. A ghost town is a place that used to be a busy community but is now mostly empty.

What is Clems, California?

Clems was once a small but important stop on a railroad line. This line ran between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz from 1880 to 1940. Clems was located between the towns of Glenwood and Zayante.

How Clems Became a Railroad Stop

The railroad was first operated by the South Pacific Coast Railroad. In 1887, a bigger company called the Southern Pacific took over. They added fun weekend trips for passengers. This was in addition to the regular trains that carried goods and sometimes both goods and people. These trains ran several times a day, making Clems a lively spot.

The Great Earthquake's Impact

On April 18, 1906, a huge event changed many things in California: the San Francisco earthquake. This powerful earthquake badly damaged the railroad tracks, bridges, and tunnels near Clems. Workers quickly repaired and rebuilt the damaged parts. In 1907, the railroad tracks were made wider to a "standard gauge," which meant they could fit more types of trains. A small shelter was also built for people waiting for trains in Clems.

Why the Railroad Closed Down

The railroad line that served Clems faced more challenges. In February 1940, a very big storm hit the area. It caused a lot of damage to the tracks. Because of this, the Southern Pacific company decided to close the line for good in November 1940. Around the same time, a new major road, State Route 17, was finished. This new road went around Clems and many other small stops. People could now travel by car, and the old railroad became less important.

Clems Today: A Quiet Place

Today, Clems is a very quiet area. Only a few people live there. It is now considered part of the nearby community of Glenwood. The sounds of trains and busy travelers are long gone, leaving Clems as a reminder of a past era.
