The Cleveland Buckeyes were a baseball team that played in the Negro American League. They played from 1942 to 1950. This team was part of the Negro Leagues. These leagues were for African American players. The Buckeyes played in two big championship games called the Negro World Series. They won in 1945 against the Washington Homestead Grays. They lost in 1947 to the New York Cubans. The team was based in Cincinnati for its first year. Later, it moved to Louisville for a short time.

The Buckeyes Begin Their Journey

The Buckeyes team started in 1942. It was first called the Buckeyes Baseball Club. They began in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ohio is known as the "Buckeye State." The team played some games in Cincinnati. They also played games in Cleveland and Meadville, Pennsylvania.

The next year, the team's owner, Ernest White, moved the team. He made Cleveland, Ohio their main home. The team played their games at a stadium called League Park.

Cleveland's Baseball Champions

While in Cleveland, the Buckeyes became very successful. They won two championships in the Negro American League. These wins were in 1945 and 1947. Their biggest victory was winning the Negro League World Series title in 1945. This showed they were one of the best teams.

Moving On and Disbanding

In 1949, the team moved again. They went to Louisville, Kentucky. For a short time, they were called the Louisville Buckeyes. But this move did not help the team much.

So, they returned to Cleveland for the start of the 1950 season. However, after only two months, the team stopped playing. They officially disbanded.

Where the Buckeyes Played

The Buckeyes played their first home games in Cincinnati. They played at a stadium called Crosley Field. After one season, they moved to Cleveland. There, they played at League Park. This was their home stadium for most of their time.
