The Cliff House is a famous hotel located in Manitou Springs, Colorado. It's known for its beautiful Queen Anne style and is part of the historic area of Manitou Springs. This special building is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important part of American history. It's also a member of Historic Hotels of America, a group that celebrates old and important hotels.
The Story of Cliff House
The Cliff House was built in 1874. Two businessmen from Canada, Mr. Webster and Mr. Shurtleff, helped pay for it. At the time, it was the second biggest hotel in Manitou Springs!
It was built close to the natural Soda and Navajo Springs. These springs were popular for their mineral water. When it first opened, the hotel could host up to 100 guests. Later, more rooms were added.
This hotel was once a busy stop for stagecoaches, which were like old-time buses. Many famous people stayed here. These visitors included actor Clark Gable and former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
