Clifford Picnic: A Local Tradition
The Clifford Picnic is a popular local fair. It usually takes place during the last full week of July. This picnic is a very important event for the community. It also helps raise money for the Clifford Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The first picnic was held in August 1949. For the first few years, the Firemen's Picnics were held in a field. This field was behind the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter LaCoe. The fire engine was kept across the street at LaCoe's Clifford Farm Supply Store.
Setting up stands and tents each year was a lot of work. So, the Fire Company bought 21 acres (about 8.5 hectares) of land. This land included a small pond. This spot is now known as "the Picnic grounds." People also call it "the Clifford Carnival grounds" or "the fire house" because a new fire station was built there.
The Miniature Railroad
The Clifford Township Volunteer Fire Company is home to a special miniature railroad. This train used to be at Rocky Glen Park in Moosic. The train was added to Rocky Glen Park in 1924. It was part of the Nallin-Jennings Park's side of Rocky Glen.
The railroad ran until the early 1950s. A big fire in 1950 destroyed many rides on the Nallin-Jennings side of Rocky Glen. After the fire, what was left of the business was sold. The new owners decided to remove rides that were duplicated in other parts of the park.
The Nallin-Jennings Miniature Railroad was taken apart. It was then sold to people from the Clifford Township Volunteer Fire Company. The train has been there ever since. It has been changed over the years to keep it running. As of 2018, this miniature railroad had been in operation for 94 years!
