Cliffside is a small, unincorporated community located in Potter County, in the U.S. state of Texas. Being "unincorporated" means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county area.
History of Cliffside
Cliffside has a simple but interesting history. Before the community even existed, a train station was built here. The Fort Worth and Denver Railway opened this station way back in 1888. This was an important stop for trains traveling through Texas.
Years later, in 1905, the very first schoolhouse opened its doors. This was likely a one-room school, where all students learned together. The town itself was officially planned out on August 5, 1915.
For a short time, from 1908 to 1917, Cliffside even had its own Post Office. It was located inside a general store. However, the post office eventually closed. This was because it was very close to the larger city of Amarillo. People could easily go to Amarillo for their mail.
By 1980, Cliffside was quite small. It had only a few red buildings near the railroad tracks. The number of people living in Cliffside stayed about the same for many years. From the 1960s all the way through 2000, the population was estimated to be around 206 people.
