History of Clinton
How Clinton Started
Clinton began in 1887. A man named J. M. Massey owned land in the area. He made a deal with the St. Louis Southwestern Railway company. Mr. Massey agreed to sell his land to the railway. In return, the railway had to build a train station, called a depot, on his land.
The Railroad and the Name
The railway company built the depot in the same year, 1887. They named the new depot "Clinton." This name honored one of the railway's officials. So, the community grew up around this new train stop.
Early Services
Soon after the depot was built, a post office opened in Clinton. This was important for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It eventually closed sometime between the 1930s and 1950s.
