Discovering Clinton AME Zion Church
The Clinton AME Zion Church was built in 1909. It is a one-story building shaped like a "T." The church is designed in the Gothic Revival style. This style often includes pointed arches and tall windows.
Building Features
The church's outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. This means long, thin wooden boards overlap each other. The building rests on a foundation made of brick piers. Concrete blocks fill in the spaces between these piers.
A Place of Importance
This church holds a very important place in Kershaw's history. It was the first separate church built for African Americans in the early 1900s. This made it a central gathering place for the black community.
National Recognition
Because of its historical importance, the Clinton AME Zion Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Being on this list means the building is recognized as a significant part of American history. It helps protect the church for future generations.
