Cliola was a small, historical community located in Ellington Township, Adams County, Illinois, in the United States. It was once a part of the landscape, but it no longer exists today.

What Was Cliola?

Cliola was an "unincorporated community." This means it was a group of homes and buildings that didn't have its own local government, like a city or town does. It was simply a small settlement in the countryside.

Cliola's Location

This historical community was found in Adams County, Illinois. It was situated along a railroad line, a bit northeast of a larger city called Quincy. Being near the railroad was important for many communities back then.

The Railroad and Cliola's End

Railroads were like the highways of the past. They helped people and goods travel across the country. Cliola was connected to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.

A newspaper article from September 14, 1899, in The Quincy Whig newspaper, talked about a new railroad project. The railroad company was building a new "switch" between two places called Eubanks and Cliola. A switch is a special part of the track that lets trains move from one line to another. The article mentioned that once this new railroad switch was finished, the community of Cliola would no longer exist. It seems the new track layout meant the old settlement was no longer needed or was in the way.

Cliola's Post Office

Even though it was a small community, Cliola had its own post office! This post office opened on August 1, 1868. Having a post office was a big deal for a community. It meant people could send and receive letters and packages, connecting them to the rest of the world.
