Clive Chin was born on May 14, 1954, in Kingston, Jamaica. He is the son of a famous music producer, Vincent "Randy" Chin. Clive is a Hakka Chinese Jamaican record producer. This means he helps musicians create and record their songs. He worked with many well-known artists. Some of these include The Wailers, Dennis Brown, and Black Uhuru. Clive Chin started his journey in music at a young age. He worked at his father's business, Randy's Record Store. This store was a very important place for music in Jamaica.
Building a Famous Studio
Clive also helped with his father's recording studio. This studio was called Randy's Studio 17. In the early 1970s, it became one of the most important music studios in Jamaica. Many famous songs were recorded there.
Early Music Successes
Clive Chin had his first big success with a song called Java. This song was by an artist named Augustus Pablo. It became popular all over the world.
He also produced other popular songs in Jamaica. These included "Cheater" by Dennis Brown and "King of Babylon" by Junior Byles. Clive also produced Augustus Pablo's first album, This Is Augustus Pablo.
Creating Dub Music
In 1973, Clive Chin produced an album called Java Java Dub. He believes this was the very first album made entirely of dub music. Dub music is a special kind of reggae music. It focuses on the rhythm and bass parts of a song. It often adds echoes and other sound effects.
Clive continued to produce more hit songs. One of these was "Miss Wire Waist" by Carl Malcolm.
Life After the Studio
Later, Clive's family moved their music business to New York City. Clive then spent about 15 years running a Jamaican restaurant. It was located in Queens.

Reissuing Classic Music
In 2007, a record company called VP Records started a special music label. It was named 17 North Parade. This label was created to bring back and share the old, classic songs. These were songs that were first released by Randy's, Clive's family business.
