Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Clobery Bromley (born in 1685 – died 20 March 1711) was a British politician. He was a member of the Tory party, which was one of the main political groups in Britain at the time. Clobery Bromley served as a MP for Coventry from 1710 until his death in 1711. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons, where laws are made.

Who Was Clobery Bromley?

Early Life and School

Clobery Bromley was born in 1685 and was baptised on December 16 of that year. He was the oldest son of William Bromley, who was a very important politician himself, serving as the Speaker of the House of Commons. The Speaker is like the referee of Parliament, making sure debates run smoothly. Clobery's mother was Catherine Cloberry.

He went to Rugby School starting in 1694, which is a famous school in England. Later, in 1703, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, one of the colleges at the well-known Oxford University.

Starting in Politics

In December 1710, Clobery Bromley was elected as an MP for Coventry. This happened because the previous MP, Robert Craven, had passed away. Clobery quickly became an important member of a political group called the October Club.

What Was the October Club?

The October Club was a group of Tory MPs who wanted the government to follow "Country" policies. This meant they wanted the government to be more careful with money and to focus on British interests, rather than getting involved too much in European affairs. They often disagreed with the main government leaders at the time, known as the Harley ministry.

A Tricky Situation

Clobery Bromley's strong opinions and actions in the October Club caused some embarrassment for his father, William Bromley, who was the Speaker. The chief minister, Robert Harley, even complained to Clobery's father several times about his son's political behaviour.

His Final Days

A New Role and Sad News

On March 19, 1711, Clobery Bromley was chosen to be a Commissioner of Public Accounts. This was an important role where he would help check how the government was spending money. He was the fifth person chosen in the vote, showing he was well-regarded.

However, by this time, he had become very ill with smallpox, a serious and often deadly disease. He died the very next morning, on March 20, 1711. The House of Commons stopped its work until March 26 to allow his father, Speaker Bromley, time to mourn. Some people, like the writer Jonathan Swift, thought this break also helped the government, as Robert Harley was still recovering from an attack.

Family Life

On March 25, 1708, Clobery Bromley married Dorothy Bromley. She was the daughter of another politician named William Bromley. They did not have any children.
