What is Clock Farm Like?
Clock Farm is a big group of connected buildings. It's located in a quiet, rural part of Kennebunkport. The main house is a one-and-a-half-story wooden building. It has a sloped roof and two small windows sticking out.
The Farm's Unique Design
A two-story section connects the house to the back. Then, several single-story parts link the house to two barns. One barn is in front, closer to the road. The other barn is behind it. The front barn has a square tower on its roof. This tower holds the famous clock. The clock has faces on each side with Roman numerals. The buildings mostly show the Greek Revival style of architecture.
The Farm's Long History
The oldest part of Clock Farm was built around 1773. It was built by a person named Peter Johnson. We don't know much about the farm's early owners. But in the late 1800s, Thomas Lemmons bought it. He owned a factory in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He used Clock Farm as his summer home.
The Story of the Clock Tower
The clock on the barn has a fun story. It used to be on Thomas Lemmons' factory. But the clock didn't keep good time. His workers often complained about it! So, in the early 1900s, Lemmons moved the clock to his farm. He had the special tower built on the barn just for it. Since then, the clock tower has been a well-known sight. It's a unique and interesting part of the area.
