"Cloud Home" is a historic house located in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. It is a beautiful old building in the Greek Revival style. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek temples. The house sits on seven acres of lovely landscaped land.
What is Cloud Home?
Cloud Home is a large, two-and-a-half-story building. It is made from fieldstone, which are natural stones found in fields. The house has a special front porch called a portico. This porch has a triangular roof, like a pediment, supported by four tall columns. These columns are in the Corinthian order, which means they have fancy tops with leaf-like designs.
Buildings on the Property
Around the main house, there are other interesting old buildings. You can find a big stone barn. There is also a stone smokehouse, which was used to preserve meat. Next to the smokehouse is a small stone building called a necessary, which was an old-fashioned outhouse.
One very unique building on the property is an octagonal stone building. This means it has eight sides! Inside, it has a secret underground room or vault. This special building was once used as the law office for John Bannan, who was a local lawyer.
The Bannan Family's Home
The Cloud Home was built by John Bannan and his wife, Sarah Ridgeway Bannan. They were an important family in the area. The land for the property was given to the Bannan family way back in 1826. The main house, the mansion, was then built much later, between 1851 and 1852.
In 1978, Cloud Home was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States that are worth preserving.
Cloud Home Today
Today, Cloud Home is owned by an organization called Friendship House. This group helps young people. Cloud Home is now used as a home for boys, providing them with a safe place to live.
