Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cloverdale is a small, unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's about 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of Creswell, located along Oregon Route 222.

A Glimpse into Cloverdale's Past

Cloverdale has a rich history, especially from the early days of Oregon. It was once a busy little settlement.

Early Industry and Growth

In 1851, one of the very first sawmills in Lane County was built right here in Cloverdale. A sawmill is a factory where logs are cut into lumber. This was very important for building homes and other structures in the growing area.

Just a year later, in 1852, a gristmill was added. A gristmill grinds grain, like wheat or corn, into flour. This meant people could easily get flour for baking bread and other foods.

A Town That Almost Was

In 1855, people tried to create a proper townsite in Cloverdale. A townsite is a planned area for a new town. However, the plans for this town were later canceled. Even by 1884, people thought Cloverdale was mostly a "thing of the past," meaning it wasn't as busy or important as it once was.

Community Life and Buildings

Despite not becoming a big town, Cloverdale still had important places for its community. It once had a store where people could buy supplies, a school for children to learn, and a blacksmith forge where metal items were made and repaired.

The Historic Church Building

The old Cloverdale Methodist Episcopal Church building is still standing today. It was built in 1904. Over the years, it served different groups, including Baptist and Mennonite congregations. It even became a community hall for a while. In 1999, the McKinlay family bought the building and carefully restored it. Now, it's used as a beautiful wedding chapel.

The Old Schoolhouse

Another important building that still stands is the old schoolhouse. It was built in 1911. This building reminds us of the many children who learned and played in Cloverdale over a hundred years ago.
